     Hormone replacement therapy:

"Bio-identical hormones" is a term many patients have heard about. It simply means hormones that are exactly the same as the ones produced in our own bodies. Some people equate "natural" to bio-identical hormones. All bio-identical hormones are plant-based, coming from yams and soybeans. Often the hormones that are prescribed for relief of peri-menopausal symptoms ARE natural or bio-identical. There is no difference between the safety and efficacy of hormones from bio-indentical compounding pharmacies versus traditional pharmacies. In fact, manufactured bio-identical hormone doses are more strictly controlled than in compounding pharmacies, where FDA standards may not be met, and whose products may not be covered by insurance plans. Some of the benefits of bio-identical compounded hormones are variability of dosing, combining of multiple hormones into one compound, and route of administration choice.

Generally, we feel blood and/or salivary hormone testing is not beneficial in determining what dose a patient needs. These levels vary throughout the day, and are not linked to which symptoms are bothersome. Treatment of these symptoms is very different from treating such conditions as diabetes or thyroid problems, where levels directly affect treatment. In using hormones, we prefer to treat people, rather than numbers, since each individual's needs vary. Also, insurance frequently does not cover the costs of these tests, which can be very expensive to you, the patient.
